SPICE Chili Cook-Off

Attention Chili and Bean Lovers…it’s CHILI TIME on SPI!!!

Come to Louie’s Backyard on Saturday, February 10, 2018 for one of the Island’s favorite events, Walk for Women’s SOUTH PADRE ISLAND CHILI EXPO (SPICE).

This annual FUNdraising event, organized by the volunteers of Walk for Women, is for all who love a good pot of chili, a big batch of beans, great music, and helping a GREAT cause!

For a $5 admission fee, you will sample some wonderful chilies and beans and dance to the music of Pelican West who will be performing live from 11 am to 2 pm.

If you profess to make the best chili or beans, you will definitely want to enter the SPICEcook-off. Cash prizes will be awarded for 1st place ($300), 2nd place ($200) and 3rd place ($100) winners in Texas Red, White or Green, and Freestyle (anything goes) chili categories and for the Beans. Plaques will also be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each category and for the winner of People’s Choice.

CHILI and BEAN COOKS who want to enter the cook-off can find entry forms online at or email Rees at or call Rees at 956-495-9884. Act soon as the deadline for cook’s entry is Wednesday February 7, 2018.

What you need to know about the SOUTH PADRE ISLAND CHILI EXPO (SPICE):

7 am: Doors open for cooking teams

11 am: Cook-off doors open to the public.

11 am – 2 pm: Live music by Pelican West

12 noon: Chili and Bean Cook-off tasting begins. The event includes unlimited chili (until it runs out)!

2 pm: Awards presentation

All proceeds from SPICE admission, merchandise sales and donations benefit SPI Walk for Women, an all-volunteer 501c(3) organization committed to helping women in the lower Rio Grande Valley with financial, and diagnostic support as they battle breast cancer.

Walk for Women, Inc. is an organization initiated by local women to heighten breast cancer awareness and to raise money for the area residents affected by this disease and who are in need of financial assistance. Gift certificates, auction items and cash donations are always appreciated and welcome.
