Rio Grande Valley residents of all ages turned out on the Island Sunday morning to show their support for raising awareness of breast cancer.
Volunteers and participants in the 11th annual Walk for Women for breast cancer awareness began gathering at the SouthPadre IslandConvention Center at 8:30 a.m. and at 10 a.m. they stepped off, moving south along Padre Boulevard. “This was all started because of one person, one friend named Jayanna, who had been diagnosed,” said Shannon Reich, who was a volunteer coordinator for the event.

“We started to help her through the financial difficulties of trying to get treatment and make it through,” she said, “and now this will be the eleventh year for Walk for Women.” Reich, along with volunteer coordinator Toni Davila, have participated in every Walk for Women three-day event up to now, and will continue to do their part for women who have been affected by the illness. “I was actually helped by Walk for Women,” Davila said. “I am helping coordinate, but I am one of the people who has benefitted from the organization.” Event coordinator Cheryl Hill said Walk for Women raises money to benefit local women. “We are local women working to benefit other local women in the community,” Hill said.
