A $200 million project to deepen the Port of Brownsville got a boost from one federal agency. The Army Corp of Engineers said deepening the Port of Brownsville is a national interest. The port is now in the position to receive federal funding to off-set some of the cost. Port Director Eduardo Campirano said they would like to deepen the channel from 42 feet to 52 feet, which will open the facility to large vessels carrying more cargo. The last time the port was deepened was in the 1990s.
