The former USS Saratoga aircraft carrier should enter the Brownsville Ship Channel around 8 a.m. Friday and arrive at ESCO Marine’s ship-recycling facility about 3 p.m., according to the latest arrival estimates.
The decommissioned ‘supercarrier’ is crossing the Gulf of Mexico to Brownsville from Rhode Island after rounding the southern tip of Florida on Friday. The 1,063-foot former warship was launched in 1955 and decommissioned in 1994.
The Saratoga is the second aircraft carrier to come to Brownsville where it will be scrapped. A third, the USS Constellation, departed Washington state on Aug. 7 en route to Brownsville and is expected to arrive in early December.
